Despite of this increased flexibility, fracture is still a concern to NiTi instruments, and they have been reported to undergo unexpected fail 3. This flexibility is an important property that allows the preparation of curved canals while minimizing deviation 2. NiTi instrument can bend far more than stainless-steel instruments before exceeding their yield point 1. NiTi Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) instruments have the combination of good biocompatibility, good mechanical strength, and specific properties, such as the shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE). ![]() Nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic instruments have been introduced to facilitate the instrumentation of curved canals. Keywords: endodontics files, NiTi, SMA, torsion fracture According to Scanning Electron Microscopic evaluation, all the files showed ductile fracture morphology. In relation to the maximum torque at the instant of the fracture, one of the brand presented better performance than the other. The results showed that there was a significant statistical difference in the maximum fracture torque and no statistical difference for the angular deflection for the analyzed files. The helical plastic deformations and the fracture surface morphology were evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopic. The maximum angular deflection and the maximum torque were analyzed without axial loading. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance and the fracture surface of NiTi SMA engine-driven endodontics files submitted to clockwise torsion. To analyze the quality of the obturations, the canals were radiographed and evaluated by three examiners. Results showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB) in the middle third, and a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB and MS < SB) in the apical third. The data of the middle and apical thirds were separately submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey’s test for the comparison of the techniques. To analyze the penetration of the filling material, the simulated canals were digitalized and the images were analyzed using the Leica QWIN Pro v2.3 software. A total of 30 standardized simulated canals were divided into three groups according to the technique of obturation used: MS (McSpadden), SB (SystemB/Obtura II), and LC (Lateral Condensation). The aim of this study was to evaluate the penetration of a resin/polyester polymer-based material (Resilon Real Seal SybronEndo Corp., Orange, USA) into simulated lateral canals, and the quality of obturations by different techniques.
